HGrubbs: Blade Runner Project Creative Process

Image
Our group decided to create a physical play on Roy's final words, "...All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die...". We first brainstormed and decided to form a literal cloud of rain, but the raindrops are his tears containing his memories being lost. I chose to include actual moments and people from the movie, such as Pris, Deckard, and Tyrell, along with the moments where he saved Deckard, when he killed Tyrell, and when he was on the run from the police. I also chose to include images of his famous recap prior to his death, "...I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate...". Aside from these specific images, I also included images of of "themes" that I think plagued his mind. The concepts of lost time, AI, data, death, sonship, space, running, fire and ice, and pain were all played upon with various ima...

HGrubbs: Philip K. Dick

Following the class showing of Blade Runner , I was intrigued reading into the works of Philip K. Dick. Dick spent over 20 years publishing novels in the realm of science fiction. A fair part of his work was influenced by drug use and extraordinary religious experiences, but that’s a story for a different time. Most notably, Dick published the novel, Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? , which inspired the famous film, Blade Runner . Not only was this film monumental in dystopian fiction, but Dick had a lasting impact in a variety of ways across science fiction as a whole. Even recently, Dick’s writings have served as the basis for several popular films and series such as, The Adjustment Bureau, Minority Report, and The Man in the High Castle . I can’t wait to see how accurate or inaccurate Dick’s visions turn out to be regarding the future of society.
